Memorial Day: Honoring Military Working Dogs Through Custom Portraits
Memorial Day is a time to honor those who gave everything in service to their country. This year, we want to take a moment to recognize a group of veterans who rarely make it into the history books: the military working dogs who have served alongside U.S. soldiers in every major conflict since World War I.
A Brief History of Military Working Dogs
Dogs have served in the U.S. military for over a century. During World War II, the K-9 Corps trained more than 10,000 dogs for sentry duty, search and rescue, and messenger work. In Vietnam, scout dogs saved an estimated 10,000 American lives. In more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, military working dogs — primarily Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds — have served as bomb detectors, patrol dogs, and combat assault dogs, often deployed on the most dangerous missions alongside Special Operations forces.
These dogs don't receive medals in the traditional sense. They don't get parades. But the soldiers who served with them never forget them.
The Bond Between Handler and Dog
Veterans who served with military working dogs describe the bond as unlike anything else in their experience. "He knew when I was scared before I did," one handler wrote of his dog, Rex, a German Shepherd who served two tours in Afghanistan. "He was my partner. My responsibility. My friend."
When these dogs retire — or when they don't come home — the loss is profound. Many handlers fight to adopt their dogs after service. Some commission portraits as a way of honoring what they shared.
Honoring a Service Dog Through Art
A custom portrait is one of the most meaningful ways to honor a military working dog — whether they're a retired service dog living out their days in a loving home, or a dog who gave their life in service. Our artists work from photographs to create hand-painted portraits that capture not just the dog's appearance, but their presence, their alertness, their character.
Several of our most moving commissions have come from veterans and military families. We approach each one with the same care and respect we bring to every portrait — and a little extra.
This Memorial Day
If you know a veteran who served with a working dog, consider commissioning a portrait as a gift. If you have a retired service dog in your family, consider honoring their service with a painting that will last long after they're gone. And if you simply want to acknowledge the dogs who served — thank you for remembering them.
