Three Generations of Dog Moms: One Family's Portrait Tradition

Some families pass down jewelry. Others pass down recipes. The Henderson family? They pass down dog portraits.

It started with Margaret, the grandmother, who commissioned a portrait of her Golden Retriever, Rusty, in 2019. "I'd never spent money on something so frivolous," she recalls. "But when I saw the painting, I understood. This wasn't frivolous. This was permanent."

The Tradition Takes Hold

When Margaret's daughter Emily saw the portrait, she immediately wanted one of her own Labradoodle, Bailey. Then Emily's teenage daughter, Sophie, asked for a portrait of the family's new rescue mutt, Luna — for her 16th birthday.

Now, three portraits hang in three homes: grandmother, mother, and granddaughter. Each painted in the same Premium Acrylic style, creating a visual family tree of beloved companions.

A Legacy of Love

"It's become our thing," Emily explains. "For major birthdays, for Mother's Day, for Christmas — someone gets a new portrait. And we all gather to unwrap it together, even if we're in different states, via video call."

The tradition has outlasted two of the dogs themselves. Rusty passed in 2021, but his portrait remains. "That's the thing about these paintings," Margaret says quietly. "They stay. Even when everything else changes."
