A College Grad's Gift to Her Childhood Dog

When Emma walked across the stage at her college graduation, there was one family member missing from the audience: Buddy, the Golden Retriever she'd grown up with. At 14 years old, Buddy was too frail to travel. But he was there in spirit — and soon, he would be there on canvas.

The Decision

Emma had spent four years away at college, coming home only for breaks. Each visit, she'd noticed Buddy slowing down — the white around his muzzle spreading, the walks getting shorter. "I realized I was running out of time," she says. "Not just with him, but with the version of him I remembered from childhood."

She decided to use her graduation gift money — originally earmarked for a professional wardrobe — to commission a portrait instead. "Clothes wear out," she explains. "This lasts forever."

The Photo Challenge

Emma wanted the portrait to capture Buddy as she remembered him best: age 6, during the summer they spent at the lake. But her best photo was a blurry iPhone shot from 2017. Our artist worked with her to enhance the reference, filling in details from other photos of Buddy in his prime.

"The preview made me cry," Emma admits. "It was him. The him I'll always remember."

A Full-Circle Moment

The portrait now hangs in her parents' living room, where Buddy can see it from his favorite bed. "He looks at it sometimes," her mom reports. "As if he knows it's him."

Emma starts her new job in Chicago this fall. She won't be able to visit as often. But she's already planning to order a smaller version for her own apartment. "I need him with me," she says simply. "Even if it's just in paint."
