Meet the Artist: How Our Cat Portrait Specialist Captures Whiskers

Cats are notoriously difficult to photograph — and even harder to paint. They move when you want them still, look away at the perfect moment, and somehow always manage to look slightly unimpressed.

That's exactly why we have a specialist for them.

Meet Mei, Bolapawzi's lead cat portrait artist, who has spent over six years perfecting the art of capturing feline personality on canvas.

What Makes Cat Portraits Different

"Cats are all about subtlety," Mei explains. "A dog will give you a big, open expression. A cat gives you a flicker — a slight narrowing of the eyes, a tilt of the ear. If you miss it, you've missed the whole personality."

Her process starts long before the first brushstroke. She studies the reference photo for each cat's unique features:

  • Whisker placement: Every cat's whisker pattern is unique — she maps them carefully before painting
  • Eye shape and color: From copper to heterochromia, feline eyes are the soul of the portrait
  • Fur direction and texture: Short-haired tabbies, long-haired Persians, and curly Rexes each require a completely different brush technique
  • The "expression moment": That one look that says everything about who this cat is

The Whisker Challenge

"Whiskers are the hardest part," Mei admits with a laugh. "They're so fine, so precise. One wrong stroke and they look stiff instead of alive."

Her technique: she paints the whiskers last, using a single-hair brush in one confident, continuous stroke per whisker. No hesitation. "You have to commit," she says. "Cats can tell when you're not confident. Even in a painting."

What Makes a Great Cat Reference Photo

Mei's top tips for sending the perfect photo:

  • Natural light near a window — avoid flash, which flattens features and creates red-eye
  • Eye-level angle — not from above, which distorts the head shape
  • A relaxed moment — a cat mid-yawn or just waking up often shows more personality than a posed shot
  • High resolution — the more detail she can see in the fur and eyes, the better the portrait
