A Cat Dad's First Portrait: Why He Waited 10 Years to Commission Art

A Cat Dad's First Portrait: Why He Waited 10 Years to Commission Art

Marcus had owned cats his entire adult life. Three of them, over 10 years. He'd photographed them obsessively, framed his favorites, even printed a few on canvas. But a hand-painted custom cat portrait? That always felt like something he'd do "someday."

Someday finally came when his third cat, Miso — a 12-year-old orange tabby with a torn ear and an opinion about everything — started slowing down.

Why He Waited So Long

"I kept thinking it was too indulgent," Marcus told us. "Like, who commissions a painting of their cat?" He laughed. "Turns out, a lot of people. And I wish I'd done it sooner."

For many cat dads (and cat moms), the hesitation is the same: it feels extravagant, or they're not sure the result will actually look like their pet. The preview-before-shipping process was what finally convinced Marcus to try.

Choosing the Right Photo

Marcus sent us seven photos of Miso. Our lead artist reviewed each one and recommended a candid shot taken on a Sunday morning — Miso sprawled across a stack of books, one paw dangling off the edge, looking mildly inconvenienced by the camera.

"That's him," Marcus said immediately. "That's exactly him."

The best reference photos aren't always the most technically perfect. They're the ones that show your cat's true personality — the look only you recognize.

The Painting Process

Marcus chose our Premium Acrylic style for its fine detail and warm finish. Over 8–12 hours, our artist:

  • Captured the specific orange-and-white pattern of Miso's tabby coat
  • Rendered the torn ear — Marcus specifically asked us not to "fix" it
  • Painted the amber eyes with the slightly judgmental expression Miso was known for
  • Added a soft, warm background that let Miso's coloring take center stage

The Moment He Saw It

"I actually teared up," Marcus admitted. "Which I did not expect. It's just… it's him. The torn ear, the look. It's Miso."

The portrait now hangs in his home office. Miso, still very much alive and still very opinionated, has reportedly shown no interest in it whatsoever.

Why a Portrait Is Worth It

In an age of digital everything, a hand-painted portrait is something different — a physical, permanent record of a bond that matters. Whether you're celebrating a milestone, honoring a pet who has crossed the rainbow bridge, or simply want to capture who your cat is right now, a custom portrait is a decision most people say they wish they'd made sooner.
