When the Nguyen family decided to move from Boston to Portland, they spent weeks deciding what to keep, what to donate, and what to leave behind. Furniture was measured against doorways. Books were weighed against sentiment. Clothes were sorted into keep and donate piles that somehow always ended up back in the keep pile.

The last thing loaded onto the moving truck was the first thing they'd decided to bring: a custom hand-painted portrait of their dog, Cooper.

The Portrait

Cooper is a seven-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog with a face that, according to his owners, "looks like he's always about to say something important." The portrait was commissioned two years ago as a housewarming gift when the family moved into their Boston apartment. It had hung in the living room ever since — the first thing visitors noticed, the last thing the family looked at before bed.

"We didn't even discuss whether it was coming," says Linh, the family's mother. "It was just understood. Cooper goes where we go. And so does his portrait."

The Move

The portrait was wrapped in moving blankets and placed upright in the truck cab — not in the back with the furniture. "We didn't want it getting jostled," Linh explains. "My husband said I was being ridiculous. Then he put it in the cab himself."

Three days and 3,100 miles later, the portrait arrived in Portland without a scratch. It was the first thing hung in the new house — before the curtains, before the shelves, before anything else.

Why It Matters

"A new house doesn't feel like home right away," Linh says. "But when Cooper's portrait went up on the wall, it started to. It was familiar. It was ours."

Cooper, for his part, sniffed the new walls thoroughly and then settled in front of his portrait as if checking that everything was in order. It was.
